Tangent, Exact Rail, and Kadee seem to be good at this, but after being burned over the years, I think in terms of trust but verify--particularly with the more mass produced models and RTR. The biggest problem with Atlas Cars and Locsos, they include Accubreak Couplers. I do like your products, they are worth every penny, especially when compared to your competition. While laying track, I custom painted and detailed a large number of undecorated cars for my freelance railroad as well as a number of regular kits. The weight of the car and the sheer detailing are un-matched in anything but a brass model. This attention and focus is noticeable in the quality and variation presented in Tangent Scale Models releases. What would you consider the best rolling stock brand manufacturer with the most detailin their rolling stock regardless of price in HO scale for prototypes from the40s to 70s. These products are in a class of their own and are a good example of you get what you pay for.
They cover the a good spectrum from the 40's to the 70's. I'm not trying to impress anyone with my rolling stock but so long as they operate without any problems, I am more than happy. Then Life-Like's Proto 2000 Covered Hopper kits hit the market featuring metal wheels - these were now "the best". Easy to add details if so desired. They usually need some enhancement, especially replacing the stirrups; they stand out as overly large. Yet if you are up for the work, Accurail and resin kits can produce excellent cars as well. Also, somewhere in there Intermountain had 2-bay covered hopper kits which included etched-metal walkways.
