Im not usually one for pink shoes, but these really stand out in a good way. It wouldnt be my first choice for going an ultra distance based on weight. If you live in a wetter region, keep waiting for Nike to team up with Vibram to put a real midsole on this one. With its success came the need for a trail version.
I am never all that psyched to get a Nike into the testing lab, mainly because I want so badly to love them, but they all tend to be too narrow for my wide feet. Its also refreshing to not have such a squirrely ride from Nike which is not something that bothers me. Small details make me happy. There are plenty of trail shoes with a more breathable upper. Well Nike nailed the underfoot comfort with the Peg Trail 3. The Nike Pegasus Trail isnt far from that mark. The strategic mesh uppers supply lightweight, breathable comfort and are complemented with Dynamic midfoot band systems for a secure, supportive fit. Its a very comfortable shoe. This shoe would be pretty good for just about any training distance. Use the Pegasus Trail 3 on technical trails at your own risk. On the flip side, theres no gaiter attachment point on the forefoot. The rubber compound is Nikes RS 001 that offers satisfactory traction over most surfaces unless were talking about ice or wet rocks where most outsoles struggle to grip. Thats because it uses a gaiter, whereas the non-waterproof Pegasus Trail 3 does not. Both the GTX and non-waterproof variants use a soft mesh. The upper has a smooth and secure fit, and the soft gaiter on the Gore-Tex version is useful. It offers a smooth ride via React foam, a very comfortable fit that most any runner would enjoy, mild stability for those who would seek that, and mid-levels of underfoot protection. While I loved how locked down my heel and midfoot felt in these, I felt there was less space in the width of the toe box. But the responsiveness of the midsole does make it a bit wobbly, which luckily Nike planned for. It looks amazing, the full React midsole underneath is a wonderful experience (honestly one of the more comfortable shoes of any shoe in recent memory) and then theres the outsole. The Nike Pegasus is well known. It doesnt feel quite as soft as in the, The slightly more dense form of React foam offers a moderate level of protection that I would compare to the, One of my expectations was that the Peg Trail would be a similar fit to the rest of Nikes offerings. The Pegasus Trail 3 design is downright beautiful, and Nike would do well to skim some kids from the trail design team and replace some of the dead wood in the road department (lets be honest the Invincible, React Miler, even the road Pegasus are underwhelming at best). Lastly, its got a semi-reflective swoosh. Like the V2, the upper retains the functional yet quirky toe-bumper. That and I wasnt a big fan of the stack height. This also gives the toe-box a broad profile with plenty of toe splay room. For this review, we chose the Pegasus Trail 3 Gore-Tex thats $30 more expensive than the standard model. If youre a light pronator looking for a supportive trail shoe this may be worth a look. The protective toe-bumper is a clever design that uses the outsole as an extension of the upper. The outsole is 5.5mm thick and 86HC hard (compare to 3.8mm average outsole depth and 79.2HC hardness), meaning it wont wear down easily. Its honestly fucked up they keep putting this on shoes because its dangerous for runners. Spend .00000001 percent of your budget and develop a respectable rubber. But not for wet running. But mostly Ill just keep them with my Gremlin colony, far away from water. There are extras like the toggle lacing and protective toe-bumper over a ripstop mesh upper. The collar padding is concealed behind the gaiter, and perform as intended. Here, were comparing the Pegasus Trail 3 with outdoor shoes with a lower technical level than the Saucony Peregrine 11, Brooks Cascadia 16 (our review is here) and even Nikes Terra Kiger 7. As a smaller runner, I probably wouldnt reach for these for short, fast trail racing. The fine details like the pull tab and accents really make this thing pop! For a firmer, yet protective and proprioception-friendly ride, the Nike Terra 7 is the shoe to get. The traction is decent. Comparable products would be trail shoes with low-profile lugs and a comfortable midsole and upper. Although this shoe would be ideal in cold temps thanks to its breathability issues, its not great in cold weather. I finished a trail run on the road, and this was slipping out from under me on a slight incline. Oh and this shoe already sits at the upper end of the weight spectrum. Though the tongue is attached to the upper, it also has a working flap for ease of entry. I went across several creeks in this shoe, and all crossings were a lost cause. I think that if you love the road version, youll likely want to saddle up this mythical trail horse for a familiar ride on some backcountry singletrack. STEF: The biggest update to the Pegasus Trail 3 is the updated fit in the midfoot through the collar and heel counter. The foam midsole has a nice bounce to it.
